Our 2009 report, Ka-BOOM! The Power of Appliance Standards, is one in a series of national- and state-level analyses by ACEEE and ASAP assessing the potential impacts of new and updated appliance standards. In this report we reviewed twenty-three products for which federal standards are due between 2009 and January 1, 2013 (i.e. during the current presidential term) as well as an additional three products whose potential savings warrant consideration for earlier-than-scheduled rulemakings. As in our earlier reports, we estimated the potential energy savings, economic benefits, and emissions reductions, though in this iteration our primary focus was at the national level. Our estimates are based on the assessment of standards levels that are achievable using available technology and, importantly, are cost-effective for consumers.

State-Level Benefits from Federal Standards
If you'd like to look at state-level benefits from federal standards, please refer to our 2012 report,The Efficiency Boom, which supersedes Ka-BOOM. The state tables include energy consumption and dollar savings estimates, as well as estimates on avoided emissions and peak load capacity reductions. We also provide estimates of consumer economics, such as the benefit/cost ratio and simple payback period.
